Villa Park will no longer host the rugby sevens at the 2022 Commonwealth Games

Villa Park was removed as a place for its 2022 Commonwealth Games.
With the soccer season beginning to accomodate that the 2022 Qatar World Cup in November, Birmingham 2022 have declared the Ricoh Arena will replace Villa Park as host venue.
The Ricoh Arena is now available since the dispute with stadium owners of Coventry City Wasps rugby club, that has observed that the Sky Blues groundshare with neighbours Birmingham City for the 2019/20 season.
In a statement, chief executive of Birmingham 2022, Ian Reid stated:“We are disappointed Villa Park will unfortunately no longer be part of our portfolio.
„But we expect to keep on working closely together with Aston Villa in the run-up to the Games.“
It was confirmed that event organisers have also shifted the netball championship from Coventry Arena to the NEC.
The decision reflects the growing popularity of the sport, with England attempting to keep the gold trophy last year they claimed against Australia, whilst building on their World Cup finish that brought huge crowds in Liverpool the summerseason.
„We’ve been considering how best to optimise the mix of places available to people,“ Reid added.
„Ensuring we’re developing a great adventure and showcase to the sport, the athletes, the audiences as well as the host city and region.
„We’re thrilled to be able to relocate netball into a bigger place because this game’s profile has significantly increased because the 2017 bid.“
The Commonwealth Games will be held at venues throughout Birmingham and the West Midlands from July 27 until August 2, 2022.
