Somerset’s Tom Banton named PCA Player of the Month for August

Somerset’s Tom Banton has won the August PCA Player of the Month award after an month which saw him score his T20 century.
Banton has been the obvious winner with 53 per cent of the general vote, ahead of team-mate Tom Abell (22 per cent) Yorkshire’s Adam Lyth (13 percent ) along with Derbyshire’s Wayne Madsen (12 percent ).
The four-man shortlist had been chosen by the Most Valuable Player Rankings of the PCA, together using the nominees scoring greater MVP points than anybody else in August.
Fans who voted through the PCA and Sky Sports sites then had the final state, with Banton becoming the fifth different participant to win the award this year, following Liam Dawson at April,“ Simon Harmer in May, Hassan Azad in June and Ravi Ashwin in July.
„It is obviously a very particular moment. It is always great to see my name join a listing of such gifted players,“ explained Banton, 20.
Banton was nominated for the award alongside Abell, while Somerset duo Lewis Gregory along with Craig Overton are also flying high in the MVP.
„It is fantastic having such wonderful players . They have helped me a lot as I’ve come into the group which is nice for me personally being a child and now being in my first year.“
To get Banton, the month found him score 428 runs at an average of 38.9 across both formats with his highlight undoubtedly his maiden T20 hundred from Kent at Taunton.
„I have never sensed enthusiasm like it – it was a bit crazy to be honest. I fought to sleep soundly for the upcoming few nights that I presume was due to the enthusiasm.“
Banton’s batting exploits watched him accrue 116.31 MVP points for the month in that discipline – more than any other participant.
Although Somerset just missed out on a Blast sought following a final fixture against Middlesex, the youthful wicketkeeper-batsman of the side has set his sights on victory this year.
He explained:“The aim is to attempt to win the next few matches and lift the Specsavers County Championship name at our home ground in September. That might be the fantasy and that’s what everybody here in Taunton desires.
„When I scored a hundred at the Championship then I would be the youngest participant to receive one in every one of the major contests [overtaking Jason Roy], so personally I would like to achieve that. But the chief thing is merely to attempt to keep winning games.“
Beyond that, if Banton keeps on generating this August, because he has completed the questions regarding an England call-up will last to get requested. The child is eager to focus on the here and now.
„Obviously the England white ball team are so robust and have just come off the back of winning the World Cup. It is going to be quite hard to break into that group but you just never know, should you continue performing then. Hopefully one day I’ll find that phone call.
„This year I have done better in white-ball cricket but I’m always attempting to increase in the format as well. The principal objective is undoubtedly to play Test cricket for England but I’m just hoping to remain realistic in the moment so white-ball cricket will come .“
