Vincent Kompany exclusive: Those famous City moments and how I became a Manc

To 11 glittering years in the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City legend Vincent Kompany appears back in an with Sky Sports ahead of his testimonial.
Kompany, that captained Manchester City left to return to boyhood club Anderlecht because player-manager.
From the first years before City’s takeover, to a wave of decorations under Pep Guardiola, through that Aguero moment and Kompany moment, the 33-year-old chats with Geoff Shreeves to have a in-depth look in his time in the club…
Arriving from Hamburg in 2008 for a charge of about #6m, Kompany goes to perform with 360 occasions, winning two FA Cups four Premier League titles, four League Cups and two Community Shields.
Looking back to his time in City, however, Kompany insists it’s not about the decorations. The simple fact the club have transitioned to the very best team in England from mid-table, through bumps in the street, makes it a lot more special.
„Moving through the transition with City, and missing out on all these titles in the very initial decades, and then hardship in terms of expectations, neglecting, expectations, neglecting, and then carrying on. It’s better doing it like this, for me anyway While I look back on this.
„I know I played a part in shaping the culture at the club, and most likely the future of this club, which means a good deal. There aren’t many clubs in which it is possible to do it. It was a trip.
„The owners came in, and they were owners that give you time to build, the perfect kind of owners to the club. So many come in and say they are going to pile cash in, be successful, but never attain it. That possession team came in and said they went to build a strategy and vision, and will anybody doubt that?
„Not what was awful when I arrived, we needed to alter some of the players to become a winning team, however it was a great club with an Excellent background, and I think that’s the thing I attempted to maintain sharing“
The Belgian was linked from City, but rarely did speculation go far. He only had eyes for City, but though he admits he might have won league titles when he had jumped across teams, it was hard enough remaining first choice at the Etihad.
„I could have ended up in a different club, and out of four league titles you might have perhaps turned it in to eight, based on what club you go to, and how effective it is.
„It’s an aggressive club, City. It is not like you can sit for a year and then wait around for what occurs. Every move window you and the rest of the world are competing. In the world, they have the responsibility and nobody provides you the gift of staying City for 11 years, you have to earn it.
„Doing this, while being awakened by your entire body, my mom would have been pleased with me.“
Produced in Uccles, Brussels, Kompany has become an Mancunian. But that is not just a throwaway term.
Kompany is fully aware what it means to become a Manc, and says he has attempted to impact different players with those traits, and hope that lasts long after his departure.
„I turned into a Manc at the conclusion of it. Each of these core values before I was a Manc, I had, therefore I carried them when I just signed. From its end I still think there is a powerful identity of Manchester that stays in someone who never came from Manchester.
„If someone gets a knock on the pitch, you just get up, get on with it. You are in Manchester. It is irrelevant whether you are a #100m participant, since you are in Manchester you are likely to catch up, and get on with it. That is the negative of Manchester I strove to keep during, and I feel that the group was shaped somewhat like that because of myself and many others.
„I suggest, Carla [Kompany’s wife] and her family are enormous blues. There’s the strange red, that gets in at Christmas! However, I got myself in a location where it always meant a lot for me, over at anywhere else.“
Four years later being shot over, the first title of City came in the very dramatic fashion. Sergio Aguero winner from QPR meant City pipped Manchester United at 2012, widely regarded as the most striking moment in Premier League history.
‚Average City‘ subsequently took on a significance that is different.
„Typical City style will have been to lose the game and blow it. That’s what City that is typical intended in these days. Now the Kun Aguero second defines Town that is typical, you win matches and do not give you up come back.
„Was my aim against Leicester more significant? His aim was important! Mine, well, appeared better, which I never thought I would have !
„However, his was very important. He’d do his very best to wait till that moment, since he had the worst 93 moments of his career, and I’d have needed a word to say about this after the game if he did not‘ score, but that is the beauty of his job! One second can always flip it about.“
Kompany got his second in May though far more concerned with keeping the ball out of the end. Neck-and-neck with Liverpool all season, the centre-back produced a dramatic long-range attack to watch Leicester 1-0 in their penultimate match off. In history, it moved down like Aguero’s second.
He knew it was his last home game for City, however his decision was not public. Was he psychological?
„I am not an emotional type of guy. However, it was borderline psychological because I was jumped on by everybody, and probably when I felt a goal and you couldn’t find me. But I thought:’What if this is the aim, what should that is the sheet we keep to the game’s end, and that gives us the title.‘
„The game finished 1-0, the kids came on the pitch, so technically my final match for the club in the home, and that I already knew [I was departing ]. Therefore it was quite emotional. However, it’s a time I’ll never forget, City fans will never forget. Not disclosing it felt right. It was not about mepersonally, it was all about winning exactly what we needed to win, and then after there’s always enough time for goodbyes.
„It was hard to keep the emotion inside. I am searching around and watch that this iconic stadium for me, and I visit 57,000 people I am genuinely grateful towards, and also alongside me my 11 team-mates, of that I have a couple players in specific like Kun Aguero and David Silva, who I went through all with, thinking:’We’re still standing and performing so together!‘ It was a night of emotions.
„That is why I can always stay fairly humble in my entire life since I feel these sort of things just happen since you stay humble, driven and focused. Finally, someone says:’Here you go, you get your reward.'“
